It's been almost two years since my last confession. Ok so I've been pretty bad about keeping you all up to date on the blog posting. To be honest I've been both busy and lazy. I know, I know that seems rather contradictory but bare with me. I've been in the midst of a life overhaul. (Relationship drama, nuff said)

2010 Last year I had a piece (That's How I Roll) accepted into the "Art of the Horse", a nationally juried exhibit put on by the New Jersey Equine Artists Association. A really nice show that is held at the Somerset Art Association here in New Jersey. I also had the pleasure to be invited to show some of my work at the equine themed show "Le Cheval" at the Cazenovia College Art Gallery with some other very talented artists. Although I did not create any paintings in 2010 I was a part of the Sketchbook Project and I am having a great time doing another this year.

2011 I started this year at a full out run. I was lucky enough for an fellow artist to see my work and recommend me for a First Friday venue in Scranton, PA. After agreeing to hang my work I was more than aware how much I needed to come up with to have a passable show. So away I went. A holy terror with a brush and canvas. I painted thirteen (13) new paintings from March through June. (Pictures to follow). I've painted a couple since then as well.

Sometimes our soul takes us some place dark. In dark, I do not mean evil but more like the exploration of an old dusty attic in a relative's house, mysterious and exciting. The exploration of the unknown, the quickness in your heartbeat in an empty house on a stormy night after watching a horror movie. This piece "Vortex" was exactly that for me. Different moods and feelings can create different kinds of art and as I was sketching anatomical studies I was inspired for this piece. "Vortex" is available for purchase for $350.00 an acrylic on panel, 16"x8".

Farm landscape painting.

Every painting I paint I learn a little more. I find painting is a great way to relax and let the stress of work just melt into the background. Doc - Moving On to Greener Pastures

An artist friend of mine recently had to put down her American Quarter Horse. Doc had a rough past having been abused and was truly fortunate to have a great home. I painted this 10" x 8" acrylic on panel in his memory. I hope that this likeness will help his owner remember the good years of a lost friend.

Virtual Painting Party

Thanks to artists Linda Shantz and Kimberly Santini for organizing the latest painting party. The virtual painting party is a bunch of artists working off the same reference photo using it to produce each individual artist's vision from that photo. The result is a very different array of artwork from the same reference source.

This was my first time joining in the creative fun and I had a great time! As I had a pretty busy July 4th weekend, spending most of my time at the barn riding, I had a hard time finding a moment to slow down and get my painting in. Friday evening I worked about an hour and a half on my piece with the following result.

Leonardo Da Vinci once said that "artwork is never finshed only abandoned." well lets just say I was not ready to abandon this painting even after the party was over.. so after a couple more hours I reworked the piece to the finished product you see below.

Spring Time ...

I have to admit I love Spring. I fully enjoy watching the buds opening on the trees, seeing the grass turn green again and the extended time with daylight is great too!!!
Since it is the season of awakening, my husband and I are in high gear cleaning house shaking off our winter hibernation groggyness. I have to admit that I have not been as busy painting as I should be but soon I will be hitting those canvases again. I have two painting in progress, which I will post soon, that I need to get back to.

Hunter-Jumper - Work in Progress

As I enjoy the snow falling out my window I am painting away at the easel on a quiet Sunday afternoon. I thought I would post my progress so that you all can follow along. In the above photo I have painted a very general background and a basic drawing of my foreground figures.

Here you can see I have painted out the tree which seemed too strong an element and was taking away from the horse and rider forms. I have also started to add some color to the horse and rider.

I have paused my painting session for today as I am ready to settle down with my hot cup of tea with honey and stare blankly at the television for awhile. Sunday evenings are great for that!! :)

New Year .. New Painting

Well 2008 has come and gone and another year lies before us. I hope that 2009 brings good fortune and good health for all.

As usual I am busy at my easel and have done a 10" x 8" acrylic on canvas. This is a painting I have been meaning to get to for some time. I had taken this picture a few years ago and have just now gotten around to painting this fuzzy cow. I just loved all the hair on this bovine!!

Quarter Horse Congress

We have great weather here in Columbus, the sun is out in full force and I am having a wonderful time wandering the grounds. I stopped by Congress Hall and visited with the guys, Paul and Phil. They are great guys and it is so fun to watch Phil work the crowd answering any questions people may have while Paul is busy at the laptop. Tuesday October 7th

Well Monday has gone by and Tuesday is here. Only three days left (including today) till we pack up the truck and leave for Congress. I am very excited and at the same time dread leaving work because of what will be waiting for me when I return. I will have to deal with that when I get back I suppose. This morning I overslept and had to run out the door after my morning shower. I hope I am able to rise a little earlier tomorrow. Hmm did I remember to feed the cat this morning??? Yes, I think so.

Last night I made some adjustments on the fall landscape painting per the request of the client. I hope he will enjoy his little year round piece of New England fall. I will post pictures tomorrow.

October is Here

Well, October is here and as the I rise in the morning to go to work the sky is still dark and I am not happy about getting out of bed. It's cold outside the covers and the cat is curled up next to me like a little furry icon of comfort.
Though there is something in October I always look forward to... our (my husband and I)vacation at All American Quarter Horse Congress. The show is held in Columbus, Ohio and is the world's largest breed show. This year the Mural Mosaic mural, Le Cadeau Du Cheval will be presented at Congress so I am quite looking forward to seeing it in person.

Eventhough the sun is setting earlier and it is darker longer and colder in the mornings Fall is my favorite season. I love the smell of dry leaves and bonfires. The crisp sound of leaves and dry twigs under foot. The air of mystery of Holloween night. There are so many things to love about this season. The trees are dressed up, showing their brilliant leaves in shades of red, orange and yellow.

Being from New England I can really appreciate the fall foliage and why my current client would want a fall landscape captured to view all year round in a piece of art. This is a photo of the painting as it looks now. There are more layers I have to add until I call it finished but you can see there is a solid structure and color scheme already laid out.

NJEAA "Art of the Horse"

Two of my acrylic paintings were accepted into the New Jersey Equine Artists Association national juried art show "Art of the Horse" and are currently on display at the Somerset Art Association in Bedminster, New Jersey.

After attending the opening I can confidently say it is quite a beautiful show full of talented artists. Several of which I know from the Equine Art Guild (Linda Shantz , Debbie Flood, Patricia Getha, Susan Monty and Joan Jannaman )

"Le Cadeau Du Cheval" Mural Mosaic Unveiled !!!

I have been sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for this mural to begin its tour. The day has finally arrived. Yesterday, September 3, 2008 the Mural Mosaic was unveiled at The Masters at Spruce Meadows. Although I was unable to attend the event, I was so happy to see the completed mural up online!! (it may be viewed at www.muralmosaic.com.)

If the mural comes to a town near me and my hectic schedule allows, I look forward to seeing the mural in person.

I really love the colors this roan's coat. The subtle dusty colors in his coat are captivating. While I was photographing him he had a good time rolling in the dirt and I got a number of pictures of him in the act.

I just love seeing a horse just being a horse. So here is a painting of just that.

New Painting - Like my New Boots?

I am starting to work a little looser as I work on bigger surfaces and I'm really enjoying the freedom! This is a 14" x 18" acrylic on canvas that I completed over the weekend. Generally speaking I really love color and look for ways to use bright clear color in my paintings. I am trying to let myself use more color while still maintaining a sense of realism .

I was very fortunate to be able to photograph a young reining stallion “Top Spinnaker” in care of Cottingim Quarter Horses. During my photo session I was able to capture some amazing shots of him at play. He seems to have boundless amounts of energy.
That energy and athletic ability became my inspiration. I chose this particular image because I loved the angle he created with his body. It displays both his power and agility. A sudden change of direction with gusto makes him appear more like a cutter in this photo than a reiner but this stallion stops and spins to impress.
Reining is a demanding equestrian sport that has increased in popularity. Often compared with its english counterpart, dressage, reining is a series of patterns with specified maneuvers consisting of sliding stops, spins, flying lead changes, circles and rollbacks.Jenifer S. I am proud to announce that I will be a part of this wonderful project "Le Cadeau du Cheval" a mural by the great people at Mural Mosaics. You can visit their website to see the progress of this mural along with others they have completed in the past. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to photograph a very athletic Quarter Horse stallion this last weekend and came away with a number of great action photos. He comes from some great reining bloodlines and has the stops and spins to prove it!! The photo I chose to work from for my panel was one of him at liberty. He chose to change direction with gusto!! He could be a cutter in this snap shot! Very impressive horse!!

Wilbur - Finished

Here he is completed, the somewhat grumpy and yet so very sweet older gentleman.

For those who are not familiar with horses and the equine industry there are often misconceptions about horse paraphernalia. A grazing muzzle is used to benefit the horse's health and is no way hurting the horse or causing them any discomfort. In the hands of knowledgeable owners horses live long and happy lives both at work and at play.

Wilbur - Grumpy Old Man

This is a work in progess. As you see here I have most of the shapes plotted out and I'm begining to work on the details.

Wilbur foundered when he was younger and now to prevent him from doing it again he wears a grazing muzzle when he is outside. The muzzle allows him to be outside for most of the day, enjoying the sunshine, while making sure he does not overindulge himself. He comes in the early afternoon to get his lunch of hay and gets turned back out again after he is done.

This painting was the result of inspiration from a friend's One Hot Krymsun gelding, Toby.

My husband and I try to make it out to Quarter Horse Congress every year. The reference shots for this painting were taken in 2006 and I have just now gotten around to using them. Seems there are always things in life to occupy our time.. and distract us from using our time constructively. This painting will be sent to our friends as a thank you. I hope they enjoy it. They are fantastic people and I am so pleased to know them.

NH Landscape

This is a little 5"x7" acrylic painting on canvas board.

I really loved the process of creating this one. First covering the entire canvas with paint and then working in the values and colors. The inspiration for this piece came from an older photograph I had from hiking up at The Basin, in upstate NH.
